Perfect Mother of the Bride Dress

Selecting the perfect mother of the bride dress may be easier than you think. With proper planning and knowledge of your body type, theme of the wedding and your bridal budget, you can be the next best-dressed woman in the room.

Mother of the bride dress is important because its style and color choice is a direct reflection of the theme and color choice of the wedding. Once the bride has determined her wedding’s color scheme and the hour she will marry her groom, finding the style of the gown and the fit is the next step.

The theme of the wedding dictates the type of dress worn by the mother of the bride, so the mother of the bride dress should flatter the figure and be appropriate for the ceremony. The mother of the bride, or any other member of the bridal party, should refrain from wearing white, ivory and off-white gowns. particularly if the wedding ceremony is religious in nature.

Because weddings require standing for long periods, dancing and entertaining guests, the mother of the bride should consider comfort and style when selecting a dress. A dress that is too tight, reveals too much cleavage or is too short may offend invited guests and embarrass the bride or groom.

Types of mother of the bride dresses vary. The most popular style choices are tea-length, column, sheath, suit, long-sleeved, strapless and ballgown. Fabric choices for mother of the bride dresses range from silk and taffeta to velvet and wool crepe based upon the time of year of the wedding.

Most of all, the perfect mother of the bride dress involves a delicate balance between the personal style of the bride’s mother and the wedding theme of the daughter.

Best Plus Size Wedding Dress

Every woman wants to look her absolutely best on their weddings, no matter what size she happens to be. So if you are a plus sized bride who is planning for an upcoming wedding, there are several styles of plus size wedding dresses that you should keep in mind that will highlight your beauty in the most flattering ways.

Natural Waistline Dresses

One of the main targets for a plus sized bride is to downplay her hips, natural waistline dresses are good choice to achieve this look. Dresses with a natural waistline are often paired by a fuller skirt which is great for camouflaging wider hips. Fuller skirts are very elegant on a plus sized bride but be careful when considering the ball gown dresses with a natural set waist as these skirts tend to be much fuller than necessary and can actually add a heaviness to your figure that’s not always flattering.

Drop Waistline Dresses

This style of gown sets the waist of the dress a few inches below your natural waist and will help the petite bride achieve the illusion of a long lean torso. Pairing this dress with a more sensible high heel shoe will not only make you appear taller in person but it will also help create thinner body lines and keep you looking great in your bridal pictures.

Empire Waistline Dresses

For the plus sized woman who has a smaller bust, an empire waist wedding dress is an elegant way to bring a more proportional look to the body. This style of gown creates a faux waist that sets anywhere from a few inches above the natural waist to right under the bust. This creates an illusion of length and brings the eye up towards the bust and neck area which helps to effectively camouflage a thicker midsection and give proportion to bottom heavy figures.

Asymmetrical Waistline Dresses

This type of gown suits particylarly for taller plus sized women, it has an uneven waistline that starts higher on the body on one side and gradually swoops to the natural waistline on the other. Although this look is flattering on the majority of plus sized woman, shorter brides may want to avoid it because the lengthened torso of this style can make other areas of your body appear shorter.

About Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses feature  a long, sweeping skirt that comes close to touching the ground, they first began appearing on celebrities like Mary Kate Olsen and Mischa Barton, and quickly grew popular. Today thousands of women are embracing this look because everyone can wear it, whether they’re super skinny or a bigger size. With the right accessories this look can easily be worn day and night.

The top part of maxi dresses can vary dramatically, from having a halter neckline to a strapless look. The one thing they all have in common is that the top of the dress is usually fitted closely to the body. It also doesn’t contain any sleeves because it’s meant to be a little cooler and easier to wear. Most of the dresses have a banded waistline to make the stomach look smaller.

Maxi dresses are created to look good on all types of women, regardless of their body types. A pregnant woman can wear it as easily as a plus-size woman or a woman who’s relatively thin. Many of these dresses were designed with features that emphasize the bust line, while making the lower half of the bottom look smaller. Another benefit to maxi dresses is its versatility. It’s just as popular during the winter months as it is during the warmer months.

Experts recommend that shoppers look for maxi dresses that are neutral in color and avoid those with brighter colors or a loud pattern. This ensures that the user can keep wearing the dress even after the trend starts to fade. Neutral colors can also be dressed up with different accessories to create a variety of looks. They also recommend the versions with a halter neckline as opposed to the strapless versions, because these look more classic and timeless.

Maxi dresses look great on their own, but they look even better with a few accessories. Stylists and professionals in the fashion world urge wearers to look for shoes with a chunky heel to carry over the clunky and oversized look of the dress. To dress up the maxi for a nighttime event, they should opt for thinner shoes such as thongs, especially those with metallic details. Other accessories such as jewelry should be kept minimal and not draw attention away from the dress.

Skin Tone Shoes: Shade of This Summer

You didn’t need to be a seasoned trend-spotter to notice the latest look at Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall’s wedding last weekend.

Guest after glamorous guest – the Duchess of Cambridge, Natalie Pinkham, Kirsty Gallacher and Katherine Kelly – arrived wearing skin-tone heels. So why has everyone ‘gone nude’ this summer?

Kate is certainly the reigning Queen of Nude Shoes. Prince William’s new wife has been spotted several times in a pair of L. K. Bennett’s Sledge shoes and as a result the style has sold out, both online and in-store, with pairs on eBay going for nearly double the retail price of £175.

Ruth Chapman, owner of the London-based Matches chain of designer boutiques, says: “A lot of people are now taking their cue from Kate, who is taking the trend to a new audience. But nude footwear has been relevant for many seasons, predominately in the summer, but it filters through into winter with designers such as Chloe. There has been a huge surge in sales across all brands in patent, suede and leather. This summer, Stella McCartney showed patent sandals with everything and they looked beautiful.”

Not so long ago, wearing anything as pedestrian as a flesh-tone stiletto would have been style suicide.

Then, about four years ago, a handful of high-end designers began to rebel against increasingly unwearable eccentricities and offered more classic styles in discreet shades.

Christian Louboutin, the Paris-based cobbler famed for his lipstick-red soles, quietly slipped a selection of skin-toned heels into his collections, catching the eye of celebrity fashionistas Kelly Brook and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Niche designer Brian Atwood also adopted the trend, building in a hidden platform into towering heels – a must-have for Victoria Beckham, who went on to collaborate with him for her own fashion label.

Ruth Chapman: ‘Skin-tone flatters the leg and works well with occasion wear, which is where we’ve noticed the trend. If clients want to wear bold colour or prints, the nude shoe provides a strong foil – the dress makes the statement and the shoes are quieter.’

Personal Belongings of Tony Curtis to Go for Auction

Tony Curtis was one of the greatest and famous actors of Hollywood. The actor died last September aged 85, and he gave his best to Hollywood.

Now different paintings, sculptures and other collection that once belonged to him are to go at auction in the US. The different artwork of Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and Curtis himself will be sold at the auction of property from the late actor’s estate in September 2011. Memorabilia including a sailor jacket he wore during a kissing scene with Marilyn Monroe in 1959’s Some Like It Hot will also be up for sale.

The auction features property that Curtis owned throughout much of his life, from the time he served in the US Navy during World War II.

Curtis’s extensive art collection includes ceramics and prints by Braque, Chagall and a collection of 20th Century American, British and European paintings.

An original work by Andy Warhol entitled Some Like It Hot Shoe, which was given as a gift to the actor, is also expected to fetch up to $30,000 (£18,500).

Other lots range from a Faberge gold and sapphire cigarette case to watches, furniture and a rosewood flute given to Curtis by Frank Sinatra.

The items will be displayed in an exhibition for 10 days before the Beverly Hills auction on 17 September.

“Tony always said he was an artist first and an actor second,” said Darren Julien, of Julien’s Auctions.

“I think he would love the exhibition that we created. He’s looking down now and hoping the items find a good home because he truly loved these pieces.”

How to Make an Evening Dress

The best way to guarantee that your evening dress will be unique and will fit you perfectly is to construct it yourself. There is no need to be intimidated about sewing an evening gown. While some evening dress designs can require expert sewing skills, simpler dresses that are within the abilities of novices to make can be elegant choices as well. By sewing your own gown, you can select the perfect color and design to create your own stylish look.

Step 1, measure yourself, wearing the undergarments you’ll wear with the dress, and take these measurements to the fabric store when purchasing the pattern and fabric. Compare your measurements to the back of the pattern envelope, being aware that pattern sizes are not the same as ready-to-wear sizes.

Step 2, cut out the pattern and fabric according to the size necessary from the back of the envelope and your own measurements.

Step 3, pin the garment together and try it on, being careful not to scratch yourself with the pins. Be sure to wear the undergarments you will wear with the gown, as undergarments can change the fit of the dress. You may need a friend to help with this fitting. Evening dresses generally should be fitted fairly close to the body, but not so tight that the seams pull or bunch up. Adjust the seam allowances if necessary to create the ideal fit.

Step 4, sew the pieces together according to the pattern instructions, taking the time to try on the garment before and after sewing major seams, such as the sides and back seams, and again before sewing the shoulder seams or straps, if any.

Step 5, pin the hem of the dress while wearing the shoes you intend to wear with the dress. If possible, have a friend help you to pin the hem evenly. Wearing the correct shoes while hemming will ensure the hem is the correct length.

Step 6, hem the dress by hand, catching only a few threads of the outer fabric as you sew, so that the hem is invisible from the right side.

Nigerian Royal Wedding

It has been a year of royal weddings. First there was Prince William and Kate, then Monaco’s Prince Albert and Charlene — and Nigeria has just had a royal wedding of its own, the wedding of Nigerian bond trader Olawunmi Taiwo and Yoruba prince Taiwo Olashore in Lagos last month.

The pair tied the knot over two days of ceremonies. First a traditional engagement party was held, followed by what’s called the “white wedding,” when the bride wears the white wedding dress.

More than 1,000 people attended the wedding, including a number of esteemed guests of the bride’s father, a Yoruba king.

“In Yoruba culture … when you marry someone, you don’t just marry the person but you marry the family,” said bride Taiwo.

“You can’t get engaged without the father’s permission, do the introduction, follow the steps. It’s very important because both families literally become one,” she added.

To help out, Taiwo hired a wedding planner Funke Bucknor-Obruthe, who’s been behind some of the country’s biggest parties, to make sure also the entire family of the bridey is happy.

Taiwo bought her wedding dress in Dubai and selected the cloth for the engagement dress locally in Lagos. The cloth is sent to more than 600 guests to have tailored for their own dresses for the wedding. The chosen colors also set the scene for the design of the entire ceremony.

The women in the wedding party, including the bride, wear dramatic head wraps known as “geles” — a particular fashion in West Africa.

After the engagement ceremony is held, it’s on to the wedding day. It was held as a Muslim ceremony after Taiwo’s father’s beliefs.

Once the rings have been exchanged, the party begins. Bride and groom dance down the aisle, ushering in an evening of food, drink and dancing.

For father of the bride Jide Taiwo, it’s a proud day. “Like any other parent anywhere in the world you feel delighted, you feel grateful to God for everything,” he said.

But despite all the traditions and ceremonies, the marriage difference from the past in Nigeria is that women has changed their roles to be given the same opportunities with men.
