Ball Gown Style Wedding Dress

Ball gown wedding dress is the most traditional one of the wedding gown styles exist. Ball gowns evoke a sense of fairy-tale magic and can add a fantasy element to any wedding. Ball gowns are flattering to all body types and can add drama and glamour to the right wedding, making a woman’s fairy tale a reality. Your wedding day should be the day you feel most beautiful, and a ball gown will definitely fit the bill.

Ball gown wedding dresses come in various types. They can be strapless, have one shoulder bared, and have sleeves and a neckline. A different ball gown silhouette exists for every woman. A ball gown is a good bet if you are curvy, as these gowns can be very forgiving. The bottom of the dress can be ruffled, lacy, slightly angled or made of tulle, or it can fall straight to the ground. Dresses come in varying lengths, from tea length to floor length, and can incorporate many materials such as taffeta or satin. Some gowns are elaborately embellished with pearls or crystals, while others are much simpler.

Several factors come into play when choosing your ball gowns. If the ceremony will occur outdoors in warmer weather, a heavy elaborate ball gown might not be the best idea. In that situation, a simpler gown made of lighter fabric would provide a more comfortable option. You can still do the ball gown silhouette—just not as dramatic. If the wedding will take place inside a church, check to find out the width of the aisles; if your dream gown is a full ball gown with layers of tulle, you may get caught up in the pews walking down the aisle. Consider the venue when choosing your perfect dress. Also, think about the reception—whether your gown will allow for comfortable dancing, for example. Maybe a shorter gown would work better for dancing the night away, or a strapless would be more comfortable than sleeves. Consider all of these elements when picking the right ball gown.

Summer Wedding Tips

For many people summer is the perfect time to hold a wedding. Flowers are still in bloom, friends and family are on vacation, and people are enjoying the longer days. Although summer can be a cheerful time to hold a wedding, the heat can make it difficult to dress appropriately while still enjoying the wedding. Wool suits and long dresses are uncomfortable in the summer heat. The key to dressing for a summer wedding is adapting your choice of formal clothing to the weather.

Groom

A white cotton shirt worn with a black or navy suit is acceptable for a summer wedding. Some men also choose to dress in cream colored tuxedos or suits. This is particularly appropriate for beach weddings or weddings that take place in a very warm place.

Bride

Brides should choose a lightweight and thin fabric for their wedding dresses to keep cool during the ceremony. Chiffon, lace, crepe, tulle and georgette are suitable fabrics for a summer wedding dress. A shorter dress will also be more comfortable in the summer heat. A tea length wedding dress that ends between the knee and mid-calf is a good length.

Male Guests

Male guests can come to the wedding wearing a simple blazer and dress pants and tie. For an outdoor wedding during the summertime, men can leave the jacket and dress in a pair of slacks, dress shirt and tie.

Female Guests

Women can choose from a wide variety of colors for the wedding, but should leave white for the bride. Light, summery dresses are best, since they will keep you comfortable and reflect the season.

Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett

Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett Duet to Benefit Charity

A duet between jazz legend Tony Bennett and Amy Winehouse is to be released as a charity single. The late singer’s father said Thursday her daughter’s final recording  “Body and Soul” — a duet with Tony Bennett — will go to the newly established Amy Winehouse Foundation. It will be released ahead of Bennett’s Duets II album, out on 20 September.

Mitch Winehouse says releasing it in September as a charity single was “the most fitting tribute of all” to his daughter. In a statement, Mitch Winehouse said he “couldn’t be happier”. He added: “Amy was so excited to be working with Tony Bennett and really looking forward to her fans hearing this new recording. The fact that Amy’s voice is sounding as amazing and beautiful as ever and she is singing with the great Tony Bennett seems the most fitting tribute of all at this very difficult time.”

The two singers recorded the single at London’s Abbey Road Studios for Bennett’s forthcoming “Duets II” album. It was one of Winehouse’s last recordings prior to her death on 23 July.

The foundation is set to fund a range of projects focussing on young people. The family also hopes to establish a drug rehab center for addicted youths.

How to Make Lolita Clothing

Creating your own lolita clothing is easy as long as you have the right materials and tools. Minimal sewing skills are needed, but be sure you know how to work a sewing machine. Follow the below steps and you will make your special lolita clothes.

First, find clothes you can alter. Take clothes you already own, or do a quick run to the thrift store to find clothes to which you can add lolita clothing qualities. Great items for this include black dresses, skirts and vests. Remember that the lolita subculture stems from the lolita character, so a mix of strong and soft materials and colors is always the underlying theme.

Second, get lace and tulle to make your alterations. Hit a local fabric shop and find lace and tulle in bright colors to add to your garments. Use colors such as neon green, yellow and pink to add soft, young, whimsical qualities to black clothing. Lace and tulle are common materials in lolita-esque apparel due to their association with young girls.

Third, add trim to your black clothing. Lolita fashion is all about trims. Everything from a simple black blouse to a plain black skirt has a contrasting brightly colored trim. Measure the length of the garment of section thereof, and measure your lace accordingly. You can hand-sew trim on something small such as a sleeve if you have beginner sewing skills, while using a machine will likely make things more durable in the long run.

Forth, shop for plaids and white fabric. To create your own lolita fashion clothes from scratch, start with white and plaid fabrics. Materials for blouses should be soft and have a feminine demeanor, while plaids should follow the traditional schoolgirl look.

Last, use patterns to create simple apparel pieces. To create blouses and skirts, use patterns. Even with minimal sewing skills, patterns allow you to create the garment and customize it after it’s made. Cut your fabric following the pattern and sew it to complete the garment. Once you have integral pieces such as blouses and skirts, you can go about adding trim as suggested in the third step.

Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress: All the Details

Kate Middleton wed Prince William in London Friday in a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen lace wedding dress.

Why did she choose the gown?

“Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing.  Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterises Alexander McQueen’s work.  Miss Middleton worked closely with Sarah Burton in formulating the design of her dress,” read a statement on the official royal Web site.

“The dress epitomises timeless British craftsmanship by drawing together talented and skilled workmanship from across the United Kingdom.  The dress design pays tribute to the Arts and Crafts tradition, which advocated truth to materials and traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often Romantic styles of decoration.  Ms Burton’s design draws on this heritage, additionally giving the cut and the intricate embellishment a distinctive, contemporary and feminine character,” it continues.

“The lace applique for the bodice and skirt was hand-made by the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace.  The lace design was hand-engineered (appliqued) using the Carrickmacross lace-making technique, which originated in Ireland in the 1820s.  Individual flowers have been hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock,” the Web site goes on.

Middleton’s train was “two metres 70 centimeters,” or about eight-and-a-half feet.

Mark Zuckerberg Named ‘Worst Dressed’ in Silicon Valley

Mark Zuckerberg is known for a lot of things — starting Facebook, inspiring the Aaron Sorkin-David Fincher movie The Social Network — but fashion is not one of them.

The CEO and co-founder of the social networking giant has been ranked the worst dressed man of Silicon valley according to a new poll by GQ. The news comes less than a year after he was named to Esquire’s worst-dressed list in January.

Zuckerberg’s “style sins” include that he’s “oblivious to the fact that jeans and ties come in skinny sizes—or that suits exist” and that “he loves to recycle the fresh-from-Stats-class look. Zuck’s style is so poor, it even inspired a mock fashion line, Mark By Mark Zuckerberg, which thankfully doesn’t sell any actual clothing.”

Apple CEO Steve Jobs, who favors a uniform of a black mock turtleneck and jeans, comes in at No. 2.

“Apple releases an iPhone every 0.5 seconds. Steve Jobs never gets an upgrade. The Svengali’s self-inflicted uniform (black turtleneck, dad jeans, Seinfeld kicks) rival Superman’s in its homogeneity—a style blunder no AutoCorrect can fix,” writes GQ.

Bill Gates ranks No. 3.

“Curious how Harry Potter will age post-Hogwarts?” snipes GQ. “When you’re Scrooge McDuck rich, a snazzy ensemble isn’t tops on your to-do. Rather than swag out in Armani suits, Gates takes the lazy preppy approach, opting for a drawer full of V-necks in every hue.”

Find the Right Wedding Wear

It’s tough to figure out what’s right to wear to today’s weddings. Yes, there are rules, but some of those rules are made to be broken, or at least bent.

Almost every wedding falls into one of three categories: formal evening; semi formal/cocktail and informal/casual. Here’s a guide for you to find the right wedding wear.

If it’s a formal evening affair

Men have it easy: a tuxedo.

For women, a long dress is entirely suitable but not required. It is bad form for guests to draw attention away from the bride, so a low-cut, skin-tight sequined red dress, for instance, would not be a good choice. As a wedding guest, it’s not your job to stand out. That’s the bride’s job.

A semiformal/cocktail wedding

For men, it’s suits and ties. A dark suit is right for evening, but tan or seersucker is fine for day.

For women, pick a short afternoon dress or suit but fancied up with jewelry so you don’t look as though you just came from the office. Evening calls for cocktail dress, but a pantsuit is an option. Add some sparkle, sequins or rhinestones to amp your outfit.

Informal/casual

The hardest one to get right. As a general rule: Better to be overdressed than underdressed.

Men might not want to hear this, but it would be nice if they wore a tie. It’s a sign of respect for the couple. Khakis or seersucker pants with a contrasting jacket are options. But if it’s a theme wedding, dress accordingly. Dressier leather sandals are a good option for the beach. Overall, take cues from the setting.

For women, even if the wedding is on a beach or in a meadow, showing lots of skin is not a good idea. What’s right? You have to infer based on location. On a beach, a long flowy skirt is great. You could even wear an embellished tank top. But in another setting, casual means Sunday best. For sure, wear flatties or sandals if you’re on sand or hiking up a hill. Can’t figure it out? It’s totally fine to ask.

A word about white: You may wear white, with caution. But, don’t even remotely approximate a wedding-type gown. Some brides will be enraged if you wear white. Others don’t care.

Ashley Greene

Why Ashley Greene Loves Her Bridesmaid Dress

While all eyes may be on bride Bella Swan when she walks down the aisle in the fourth installment of the “Twilight” film franchise, “Breaking Dawn Part 1,” co-star Ashley Greene says the bridesmaid dresses will be worth a glance as well.

The 24-year-old actress recently chatted with InStyle about her bridesmaid dress in the upcoming Twilight film. “It was a collaboration for the dress. We wanted to have all the bridesmaids fit together and also have their own identity. So, we took a little bit of Alice’s past and put it into her dress,” she shared, “I’m really excited for everyone to see my dress, too.” In fact, the starlet even had a say in what she wore for the big day.

And just like finally finding the perfect wig for her character, Greene says the final choice for the dress was also a perfect fit — well, almost. “I didn’t love the corset,” she admits.

“There were corsets in them and we took them out by the end of the movie. We were just like, ‘We don’t care!’ There’s dancing and stuff like that so that was the only part that I didn’t like because that was uncomfortable, but once the corset came out I loved it. That’s the only way I’ve been able to describe it [the wedding]. It’s magical and beautiful.”

Michael Jackson Tribute Concert in Disarray

A planned Michael Jackson tribute concert, supported by the late pop star’s mother and four siblings, was in disarray Thursday.

Tickets for the show, scheduled for Cardiff, Wales, in October, were to go on sale Thursday, but instead of providing a link for purchases the promoter’s website asked fans to “Please Standby for further announcements.”

The head of the British company promoting the concert promised last week it would “feature the world’s most amazing music performers.” The roster would be revealed online one act at a time over the next 10 days weeks, Global Live Events CEO Chris Hunt told reporters at a July 25 news conference.

“Everybody’s in the midst of signing contracts so nothing can be announced until that happens,” Juliette Harris, spokeswoman for Global Live Events said late Tuesday. She suggested an announcement would come Wednesday.

By Thursday, still no acts had been announced.

The problems started soon after brothers Marlon, Tito and Jackie, sister La Toya and family matriarch Katherine Jackson attended the “Michael Forever: The Tribute Concert” announcement at the Beverly Hills Hotel on July 25.

But Jermaine and Randy Jackson, the only brothers not at the news conference, issued a sharply worded statement that reflected a deep division within the Jackson family over the show.

“We want to make clear that this does not reflect the position of the entire family,” the two brothers said in a joint statement.

“While we wholeheartedly support the spirit of a tribute that honors our brother, we find it impossible to support an event that is due to take place during the criminal trial surrounding Michael’s death.”

The Michael Jackson Fan Club agreed with the two brothers, issuing a similar statement.

Jackson fans posted messages on the concert’s Facebook page questioning ticket prices and the process for buying them.

Fans must place bids for a chance to buy a ticket. The higher their pledge to a charity, the better their chances of getting a good seat.

“The ticket system is so bad!! the higher you bid the better seats you get?? not every Michael fan is rich!!!” one fan posted on the “Michael Forever Tribute” Facebook page Thursday.

After several days of such negative posts, a link to the Facebook page was removed from the concert’s website.

How to Dress for a Night Out

It’s fascinating that dressy evening events — cocktail receptions, charity galas, premieres — elicit such excitement of anticipation, yet so frequently disappoint from a fashion perspective. Why is it that so many people choose evening wear that is lackluster? The lamentable fact is that all of those humdrummers out there are really satisfied with their look. In most cases, people are simply in a fashion rut. Here’s how to get out of it:

Handbags

Why, oh, why do people persist in dragging around luggage-size handbags to evening events? What are people thinking? Do they line these behemoths with plastic in order to escape with leftovers? There is an easy prescription for getting this right: The dressier the affair, the smaller the handbag. We want to sing the praises of the clutch style, which comes in dozens of iterations. The clutch is precisely that — a handbag that one clutches. Our advocacy for the clutch has caused some women to balk: “But what do I do during a cocktail reception?” You place the clutch under your upper left arm with a cocktail in your left hand. This leaves your right hand free for greetings.

Legwear

There is no simpler way to be on-trend this season than to don a pair of fashion hosiery. They are loaded with glam and pizzazz, and maybe we can think of nothing easier — and more affordable — to lift the spirits of a basic black cocktail dress than these shimmering, sparkling, or iridescent newcomers. Furthermore, believe that when one is wearing stockings, one should look like she’s wearing stockings (few things offer more dowdiness than sheer hosiery). We rarely state that a particular item provides something for everyone, but in this case it’s true!

Cover-ups

Forget about global warming; just plain ol’ air-conditioning and heating are enough for me to salute the benefits of layering. But let’s banish the pashmina, please, and consider some alternatives. You can play it safe with a dress or skirt with a matching jacket, but we want you to consider the evening cover-up an opportunity to have some fun with a novelty item, like a metallic gauze stole or an embellished cardigan, or a plain cardigan in metallic wool, cotton, or silk.

Apparel

It goes without saying that the basic black dress is the core of evening attire. It provides a neutral platform for accessories. But we want to suggest separates as well. Think about the impact and fashion counterpoint of a pencil skirt paired with an exuberant white top. Or how about a fitted bustier with a voluminous skirt? There are limitless options. Just take a chance!
