Ali Fedotowsky Forced to Postpone Wedding Due to Injury

Former Bachelorette Ali Fedotowsky has had to put her wedding plans with fiance Roberto Martinez on hold while she recovers from an injury to her femur, for which she underwent surgery in July.

“We had a date set, and that date has now passed,” the reality starlet, 26, said. “The decision to postpone the wedding was very difficult. I definitely shed some tears.”

“But I want to walk down the aisle,” she said, “I don’t want to limp down the aisle.”

Instead, the couple spent their would-be wedding day together.

“It was one of the best days we’ve had, just me and him,” Fedotowsky, who feels no need to rush the nuptials, said.

“In my mind, Roberto is my husband,” she said. “We live together; we do everything together; we plan for the future together; we fight just like a good old married couple. The only thing that’s not saying “I’m married” is another ring on my finger and a piece of paper.”

How to Dress for a Cocktail Party

A cocktail party is an occasion where the host provides hors d’oeuvres instead of a sit-down dinner, and guests mingle and drink. Cocktail wedding parties are popular for less formal weddings and are less expensive than traditional parties. While cocktail parties are not as formal as black tie or green tie in terms of dress, they are not casual dress events.

Put on cocktail attire. For women, cocktail attire means a cocktail dress. This is a mid-length dress that can be anywhere from a few inches above the ankles to above the knees. Dresses for cocktail parties should be “elegant and chic,” according to the Wedding Channel. For men, cocktail attire translates to a suit. Tuxedos are not appropriate, but a fashionable suit is preferred to a traditional business suit.

Accessorize for a cocktail reception. Women should wear jewelry that flatters their dress. Do not go overboard with accessories; choose one or two items that work well. A good purse that women can carry while they hold a drink is essential. Men should wear a tie that suits a celebration. Consider purchasing a tie especially for the occasion.

Wear the right shoes. Dress shoes are the only appropriate shoes for either gender. Women may wear dress flats or high heels. Because you will spend a great deal of time at the cocktail party on your feet, you should consider comfort when selecting your shoes. Men should coordinate their dress shoes with their suits. For example, black suit and brown shoes do not coordinate.

Style yourself appropriately. Cocktail parties are events where everyone should look polished. Men and women should style their hair with care. If you normally have a messy or relaxed look for your hair, this is the occasion for you to spend a little extra time. Likewise, women can go for a more colorful, festive look for their makeup when attending a cocktail reception.

Oprah Winfrey and James Earl Jones to Receive Oscars

It has been announced that Chat Show queen Oprah Winfrey and actor James Earl Jones are to receive honorary Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night(Aug 2) to present Winfrey with an Oscar statuette at the annual Governors Awards in November. James Earl Jones and makeup artist Dick Smith will also receive honorary Oscars at the private ceremony. The prizes will be handed out the Governors Awards in November.

Winfrey, who was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar in 1985 for The Colour Purple, will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her philanthropic work. Although best known for her long-running chat show, Winfrey has also lent her voice to several films in recent years including The Princess and the Frog, Bee Movie and Charlotte’s Web. Her philanthropic efforts include the Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in South Africa in 2007.

Blogs have been abuzz with criticism over the selection of Winfrey for the award since the announcement was made late Tuesday. In an article published Wednesday, Los Angeles Times columnist Patrick Goldstein calls the academy decision “a boneheaded move.”

“Winfrey has done good work in the world, but that’s not enough to merit an Oscar,” he writes, and plenty of anonymous Internet posters on Wednesday agree.

Film academy president Tom Sherak is coming to Oprah Winfrey’s defense. Sherak says the Hersholt Award recognizes an individual who “exemplifies giving back to the community, the world, society in an extraordinary way.”

“Oprah has given and given and given,” he said, adding that she has contributed more than $500 million of her own money to charitable causes. “She’s a member of the academy, she was nominated for an Academy Award and she has produced movies. This is not about personality. This is about a person who has come from the depths, risen to the heights and given back. That’s a perfect example of why this award was created.”

While Jones, along with makeup artist Dick Smith, will receive awards for their outstanding careers. Jones, who is best known as the voice of Darth Vader in the Star Wars film, has appeared in more than 50 films during his career and was Oscar nominated in 1971 for The Great White Hope. His other credits include Field of Dreams, Patriot Games and The Hunt for Red October. Known in the industry as “the godfather of makeup”, Smith won an Oscar in 1984 for his work on Amadeus.

He also worked on The Exorcist, Taxi Driver and The Deer Hunter. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said the honorary awards are given to individuals for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy”.

Royals Keep It Cheap: Fly Coach and Skip Honeymoons

Sure, Kate wears Zara. And buys Frosted Flakes. But are she and the rest of the royal gang really “just like us”?

More and more so everyday, says “The Today Show.” Between grocery shopping at the local supermarket and repeating an outfit (or twenty), the Duchess of Cambridge has demonstrated her thrifty side since ascending to royalty.

It’s all part of a royal-wide trend towards frugality and a down-to-earth lifestyle.

Will and Kate flew home from cousin Zara Phillips’ wedding to Mike Tindall this past weekend on a budget airline, sitting among the common folk in coach and spending a mere $62 on each ticket, reported AOL Travel.

Prince Harry also roughed it on a cheap flight, flying on the most low-budget of the budget airlines, EasyJet (a harrowing experience if there ever was one — we’ve done it). The cost of his ticket? $80.

Newlyweds Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall also demonstrated their recession-friendly ways by postponing a lavish honeymoon so they could both get right back to work immediately after the wedding. Prince William did the same, returning to his job as an air rescue pilot only days after his April royal wedding.

It’s all an effort, says “The Today Show,” to be more down-to-earth and in touch with the rest of us commoners. By keeping modest lives and maintaining professional identities outside of the palace walls, the new breed of royals are thoroughly modern.

Then again, there’s still that whole “in line for the throne” part. Maybe the royals aren’t just like us…

How to Store a Wedding Dress

Once the wedding is over, one pressing question is what to do with the dress. Many people elect to save their wedding dresses as heirloom. Professional preservation can be costly and may be dangerous to delicate fabrics. Storing your gown at home is more cost-effective, but if it is done incorrectly it can ruin the fabric. Storing a bridal dress correctly can make the difference between preserving your gown for future generations or destroying the material and fabric.

Take the dress to the cleaner. Sweat, stains, and residue from wearing the gown will cause problems for the fabric and may weaken or damage it as the fabric ages. Having the dress cleaned as soon as possible prevents damage from accumulating.

Choose how the dress will be stored. Boxed or hanger storage are popular options, depending upon what type of storage space you have available. These options will allow the fabric to breathe and prevent moisture from accumulating in the storage area, which can destroy fabric over time.

Pack the dress in an acid-free cardboard box and line the interior with acid-free tissue or storage paper if you choose box storage. Fold the dress carefully into the lined box, making sure creases are soft and any embellishments or colored areas have tissue paper layered between them. When closing the box, do not use an airtight seal or wrap as this can cause moisture to accumulate.

Select a wide hanger with soft padding for closet storage. Hang the dress on the hanger, taking care the folds of the skirt are not wrinkled or obstructed. Wrap the gown in a cloth cover made of unbleached cotton or muslin to keep dust out. Plastic covers will collect moisture and cause your gown to rot.

Choosing the Perfect Flower Girl Dress

Flower girls are the most precious part of the entire wedding party. Often echoing the princess looks of the bride. Choosing the perfect flower girl dress or gown is also an important part. Here are some helpful tips when deciding on the perfect flower girl dress.

Some brides do prefer however to have the flower girl dress match completely to the bridesmaid dresses. The choice ultimately is the bride.

Wedding Joke

There was a couple, 85 years old, who had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies. They were both in very good health, largely due to the wife’s insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade.

One day, their good health didn’t help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven. They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside.

He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet. They gasped in astonishment when he said, “Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.”

The old man asked St. Peter how much all this was going to cost.

“Why, nothing,” Peter replied, “remember, this is your reward in Heaven.”

The old man looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on earth.

“What are the greens fees?” grumbled the old man.

“This is heaven,” St. Peter replied. “You can play for free, every day.”

Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch, with every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic deserts, free flowing beverages.

“Don’t even ask,” said St. Peter to the man. “This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy.”

The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife. “Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods, and the decaffeinated tea?” he asked.

“That’s the best part,” St. Peter replied. “You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like, and you will never get fat or sick. This IS Heaven!”

The old man pushed, “No gym to work out at?”

“Not unless you want to,” was the answer.

“No testing my sugar or blood pressure or…”

“Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourself.”

The old man glared at his wife and said, “You and your stupid bran muffins. We could have been here ten years ago!”

Fitting Tips for Wedding Dresses

Every bride wants her new husband to be mesmerized by her beauty and that all starts with the choice of wedding dress. The great thing about wedding dresses is that they come in all shapes, sizes, and styles. No matter what your fashion style is, you can find a wedding dress that will suit your style and make you look like most elegant bride there ever was. Wedding dresses are formal and not like street clothes which have a comfortable fit. Don’t just go directly to the standard size you wear usually, check the size chart carefully before making a decision. All wedding-dress manufacturers have different size charts, most of which run small. So even if you wear size 4 jeans, you might have to order a 6 in Jim Hjelm or an 8 in Casablanca.

If you are planning to lose weight in the days before the wedding, but also want to purchase your wedding dress early, then please order a larger size as it is easier to let in a dress but for letting out, it is nearly impossible. But to avoid the future trouble, it is much better to start your weight loosing plan early, and then in such case, when you have reached your desired figure, you will find there’s still enough time to choose wedding dresses for your big day. For most traditional wedding dresses are made with train or floor length, therefore when taking the measurement for dress length, do remember to wear your shoes on. Different shops may have different instructions as how to take this measurement for wedding dresses, so remember to read the instruction carefully and then take the measurement. In this way it will avoid you some trouble.

If you are going to buy a ball gown wedding dress, then once you get the petticoat on, the dress will become shorter, so you must allow at least 5cms more length for this purchase. If you had the wedding dress ordered based on your current figure, then watch your weight. The wedding dress won’t suit you well if you grow fat during these days. Wedding dress is not only a significant extent, but more personally reflect the bride. The bridegroom, of course wants to show everyone who he really was during that special day. By wearing a wedding dress in accordance with the aura of a beautiful bride desires will be more out.

Gaga Meets Baba Wawa

Pop star Lady Gaga took some tough questions from Barbara Walters when she stopped by ‘The View’. From her past drug use to the time she almost got arrested, let’s see the five best moments.

Gaga’s ‘Green Club’ Membership

Say no to drugs kids: Barbara Walters did her best to put Lady Gaga in the hot seat, pressing intently on her past drug use. Gaga owned it, stating frankly “I used to do hard drugs,” but she said she has since quit and now never touches the stuff. Still, she’s not selling herself as squeaky clean, slipping in “sometimes I’m a member of the green club.” Despite lots of laughter, the herbal reference sailed right over Barbara’s head (but not Whoopi, who nodded furiously). Watch Gaga explain why she quit and never looked back.

Clinton Gets Gaga’s Stamp of Approval

Take that Tim Gunn! The Project Runway guru is taking some heat for saying “I think she’s confused about her gender,” in reference to Hillary Clinton’s preference for pantsuits. Gaga showed no love for that position, calling him out for “being a bully.” “I think Hillary Clinton has more important things to worry about than her hemline,” she added to thunderous applause from the audience.  Looks like Gunn will have to try a bit harder to make this one work.

That Time Gaga Almost Got Arrested

Crazy getups and airports don’t mix well, and it seems Gaga has found that out the hard way.  “I do have some stories about airports and things,” she said with a smile, adding that, at certain times,” I would have to change.”  Watch as Gaga recounts one memorable incident where she almost got arrested for having “no clothes on.”

Gaga Cheers New York’s Gay Marriage

Gaga beamed when asked about New York’s move to allow same-sex couples to marry, a cause that’s close to her heart as one of pop’s most outspoken gay-rights supporters. Her excitement was visible and all of the hosts shared in her enthusiasm. Watch her recap, hear how she celebrated, and how she first heard the news.

Dealing With the Death of Amy Winehouse

In a more somber discussion, Gaga was demure when discussing the death of fellow superstar Amy Winehouse saying, “I’m just so devastated and so sad.” She pinned some blame on the media proclaiming, “the world needed to be kinder to the superstar.” Barbara Walters chimed in on the pressures of fame at a young age, forcing Gaga to admit “it’s a very lonely life.” Watch as she describes her shock and why she “couldn’t speak for 48 hours.”
