How to Hem a Evening Dress

Maybe many people are able to sew, but have either never learned how or have forgotten the basics. Sewing a hem is a good opportunity to learn how to sew or to refresh your skills because it’s not too difficult. If you’ve found the perfect evening dress but it’s too long, you may hesitate before buying it — after all, it can be costly to have alterations done professionally. Knowing how to shorten it yourself is the perfect solution. But before you attempt to hem something as special as an evening dress, unless you’re an expert, it’s wise to practice on something less expensive.

First, try the dress on with the shoes and bra you intend to wear with it. Hang the dress on a hanger for several hours before you begin to turn it up.

Second, pin up the hem. This is much easier to do if you have somebody pin it up for you. Stand on a high surface, such as a table. Ask your helper to pin the hem up to the appropriate length, placing the pins in a horizontal line and lining up the seams. Get her to measure the distance between the edge of the dress and the floor to ensure that the hem is even. If you don’t have a helper, either measure the length you want from the waist down and mark the dress, or use a skirt marker, which will make marking the hem evenly easier.

Third, carefully take the dress off and turn it inside out. Set the iron at a low setting and iron along the edge. Fold over a 1/4 inch at the top of the hem, so it won’t fray. Using a hem stitch, sew along the top of the hem. With a hem stitch, you pick up just a tiny bit of the fabric you’re sewing the hem to. This makes the hem almost invisible, particularly if the thread you’re using is an exact match.

At last, iron the hem again from the inside. Check for evenness and for any loose threads.

Miley Cyrus Gets Gay Rights Tattoo On Finger

Miley Cyrus has grown into quite the fierce gay advocate, she has some new ink, and it’s making more than a fashion statement.

In addition to calling out Urban Outfitters’ president for donating to Rick Santorum and regularly tweets messages of same-sex support, such as, “I am Christian and I love you — gay or not.” Now the singer has taken her pro-gay love one step further by getting a marriage equality tattoo.

On Friday night, this former “Hannah Montana” star tweeted a photo of the tattoo, a small equal sign on the side of her ring finger. With the photo, Cyrus wrote, “All LOVE is equal.”

Cyrus has been outspoken in her support for gay rights; in 2009, after Carrie Prejean told Perez Hilton during the Miss USA contest that she did not believe in gay marriage, Cyrus tweeted, “Jesus loves you and your partner and wants you to know how much he cares! That’s like a daddy not loving his lil boy cuz he’s gay and that is wrong and very sad! Like I said everyone deserves to be happy. I am a Christian and I love you — gay or not. Because you are no different that anyone else! We are all God’s children!”

While many among the LGBT community may love Miley’s new ink, not all of her fans are as supportive. In response to a fan’s tweet disagreeing her stance, she wrote, “where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn’t. GOD is the only judge honey. ‘GOD is love.'”

Even if you don’t agree with her Christian slant or don’t like her music, it’s impossible not to be touched by young Cyrus’ commitment to LGBT progress.

Evening Dresses for Different Body Types

Believe every woman has the desire for wearing attractive evening dresses when it comes to evening parties. While it can be hard to find the right one for your unique body type, having a good idea of what will look best gives you the upper hand when browsing through the dress racks.

Petite

Don’t make the mistake of letting the dress wear you. Avoid long ball gowns with full skirts. These will create a theatrical effect. Instead, opt for shorter dresses. Showing a bit of leg will add height to your small frame. Pair your dress with a pair of stiletto heels for maximum impact.

Pear-Shaped

If you have a pear-shaped body (fuller hips and thighs), you’ll look best in a dress that accentuates your small waist while skimming over your lower body. Dresses with a fitted bodice and full or A-line skirt will minimize your hips, thighs and rear, while drawing attention to your middle. A wide, metallic belt provides a fun and stylish way to further cinch your waist.

Apple

An apple body type is defined by a wide torso (full bust, waist and back). Dresses with empire waists will divert attention from your upper body. Additionally, V neck dresses will give your body a more streamlined look, making it appear less round. Don’t be afraid to show leg, either! Apple bodies often have long, flaunt-worthy legs.

Full-Busted

Large-chested women don’t have to resort to matronly frocks in order to look elegant. When buying an evening dress, bear in mind that widely-spaced straps lend support to your bust. Dresses with corset-style bodices will enhance your assets while giving your bust and back support.

Athletic

An athletic body type is enviable. Show it off. Strapless dresses will emphasize your sculpted arms, shoulders and back. Dresses with some Lycra or Spandex will gently form to your body, accentuating your toned physique.

Obama: Debt Ceiling Deal Reached to Avert Default

President Barack Obama and Republican congressional leaders reached historic agreement Sunday night on a compromise to permit vital U.S. borrowing by the Treasury in exchange for more than $2 trillion in long-term spending cuts.

The Senate emphatically passed emergency legislation Tuesday to avoid a first-ever government default, rushing the legislation to President Barack Obama for his signature just hours before the deadline. The vote capped an extraordinarily difficult Washington battle pitting Tea Party Republican forces in the House against Obama and Democrats controlling the Senate.

Democratic Majority Leader Harry Reid said that both his party and opposition Republicans gave more ground than they wanted to. He said it’ll take members of both political parties to pass the measure.

Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said that the pact “will ensure significant cuts in Washington spending” and he assured the markets that a first-ever default on U.S. obligations won’t occur.

Bridesmaid Dress Etiquette

Participating as a bridesmaid in a wedding comes with certain guidelines to follow, particularly when it comes to the dress you will wear. Some tips of bridesmaid dress etiquette below to help making a polite bridesmaid much easier.

Paying

Rules of bridal etiquette dictate that the bridesmaids pay for their own dress. If the bride has chosen a dress that is too far out of your budget, it is perfectly acceptable to let her know in advance that you can’t participate in the bridal party. If this is the case, make sure to let the bride know with enough time so that she may replace you if she wishes. If a bride offers to foot the bill for her bridesmaids dresses, it is acceptable to agree.

Length

Bridesmaids dresses can be any length the bride chooses, though rules of etiquette state that the gowns should not be longer than the bride’s. Also, daytime weddings are an appropriate time to wear tea length, or knee length dresses, while evening and black tie weddings lend themselves better to floor length gowns.

Pregnancy

If a bridesmaid will be pregnant during the wedding, it is prudent for the bride to help accommodate. Even if the other bridesmaids dresses match, a pregnant attendant can wear a different style that will fit her body best, like an empire waist style. Or the pregnant bridesmaid can wear a maternity dress in the same color or material as the other women.

Junior Bridesmaids

Junior bridesmaids are becoming a popular alternative as a way to include older pre-teen girls who may be too old to act as a flower girl. Junior bridesmaids can wear the same dress as the other bridesmaids, or if the style is too mature, can wear a similar dress made from the same fabric.

Accessories

Bridesmaids typically choose their own shoes and jewelry, though brides can feel free to give suggestions on style or color. Brides may also want to consider giving an item like a necklace as a bridal gift to her attendants, which can be worn on the day of the wedding.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson: Shoes Are My Best Friends

While Jessica Simpson’s wedding dress is wildly discussed by others (which the celeb has claimed will “out-do” Kate Middleton’s famous gown), Simpson herself would rather talk about her first love: shoes.

“Shoes are my best friends, so it’s a good thing we have a great relationship,” the pop star-turned-entrepreneur told “Extra” this week.

“I’d rather have a great pair of high heels than a hug.”

Simpson explains that it was her love of shoes that got her started on her eponymous line, which is reported to have earned $750 million in sales last year and is on track for revenues of $1 billion in 2011.

With numbers like that, Simpson is getting the last laugh at those who once mocked her for her ditzy television antics. In fact, she has “The Newlyweds” to thank for her success: “The reason I started the collection was that everyone was wanting to buy what I was wearing on my reality show that I did,” Simpson told “Extra.” “I felt like, ‘Why am I giving all these other designers props when I could be doing it myself?'”

Not that Jessica only favors her own brand. The bride-to-be recently received a swanky birthday gift from fiance Eric Johnson in the form of a giant Hermes Birkin bag.

We wonder if he’ll follow up with matching Hermes high heels as a wedding gift.

Men’s Attire for Beach Weddings

Weddings that take place on the beach typically call for casual attire. However, that doesn’t mean you should wear a pair of board shorts or swimming trunks and a T-shirt. It’s important for all the male guests, especially if the invitation doesn’t provide specific information, to know what’s appropriate to wear to a beach wedding.

Shirts/Jackets

Men can wear a crisp linen, lightweight cotton or gauze-blend shirt to a beach wedding. Guayabera shirts, also known as Cuban shirts, cigar shirts and Mexican wedding shirts, are commonly worn to beach weddings. A pullover in lightweight, loose weave may also be worn. Choose a shirt that’s loose-fitting and soft but sturdy. Wear a light linen jacket for something a little more formal. If you want to wear something with color, choose summer or beach colors such as French blue, teal, light yellow or aqua.

Pants

Casual linen or cotton pants are often worn to beach weddings. The pants should be relaxed and loose fitting, and they can have a drawstring waist or a zip-fly or button fly. Pants with side and back pockets and cuffed styles are also appropriate. Colors for pants for beach weddings are often off-white, beige or white, but brown or black may also be worn.

Shorts

If shorts are appropriate for the wedding, you can wear cargo shorts, khaki shorts or linen shorts. If you have a lot of things to carry, a pair of cargo shorts with plenty of pockets is ideal. Like pants, shorts should also be made of a lightweight fabric and should have a relaxed and loose fit. Furthermore, longer shorts with a nine- or 11-inch inseam are more appropriate than shorter styles.

Shoes

Some beach weddings call for no shoes at all. However, if you opt for wearing something on your feet, flip flops or leather sandals are appropriate. If you prefer to wear shoes, especially if the beach wedding isn’t on the sand, leather or canvas boat shoes, canvas slip-ons or leather shoes are appropriate. These shoes complement your linen or cotton attire.

how to wear a wedding veil

How to Wear a Wedding Veil

Wedding veils come in a variety of lengths and designs, before you select a veil, you should first determine how you would like to wear your hair on your wedding day — in an up-do or down. Also, keep in mind that different lengths of veils are intended to be worn in specific ways. Also consider whether you want to wear a blusher veil, partially or completely cover your face, depending on which style you choose.

Layered

Layered veils generally have two to three layers of material, with the top layer used as a blusher to cover your face when you walk down the aisle. A normal blusher is between 25 and 30 inches long, with the rest of the veil being any length that you desire. Layered veils with blushers are typically worn on the center top of the head and secured with a comb that’s attached to the veil material.

Short

A common type of veil today is the short, non-layered veil. This type of veil is worn at the center back of the head, or above or below a bun. These types of veils are kept in place with a comb on the veil, or with a hat pin that’s inserted into the hair through a pin curl. Shorter veils typically range in length from 18 to 36 inches.

Medium-Length

A fingertip veil extends from the top of the bride’s head to her fingertips, while a knee-length veil is approximately 45 inches long, depending on the bride’s height. Both types of medium-length veils are made for wear on the top, center back, or back bottom of the head. Hold them in place with combs, hat pins or clips and concentrate on how you look in the mirror from both a front view and a side view. When placing a mid-length veil on your head, consider whether or not you want a particular part of the back of your wedding dress to be showing and adjust the veil’s placement accordingly.

Long

Several styles of longer veils exist, including the waltz-length and regal-length. The waltz-length veil commonly extends down to the bride’s calves. Regal-length veils, on the other hand, are at least 144 inches long. Because of the length and weight of these types of veils, they’re normally secured with combs or hat pins inserted through pin curls.

Lady Gaga Slams Media for Winehouse ‘Spin’

Lady Gaga slammed the media Aug 01 for how it “spins things” about the death of Amy Winehouse and the late singer’s battle with addiction.

“Amy didn’t need to learn any lessons. The world could learn to be kind to a superstar,” said the 25-year-old singer, who spoke out while serving as a guest host on ABC talk show “The View.”

Winehouse was found dead at her home in north London on July 23. The cause of her death remains unknown but the English hitmaker’s struggle with substance abuse was widely presumed to be a major factor.

“I couldn’t speak for 48 hours straight. I was in such shock,” Lady Gaga continued about her response to the news of the 27-year-old’s death, adding that she felt “devastated and sad.”

The native New Yorker discussed how she herself dabbled in hard drugs but an intervention caused her to change her ways.

“I was so embarrassed. My dad called me out on it,” she said, though she admitted she remains part of the “green club” — alluding to marijuana use.

“There’s a way to be recreational and be young and have fun,” she said, but warned her fans — known as “little monsters” — to not hurt themselves.
