Are Internet Explorer Users Dumb?

A survey by AptiQuant, a Vancouver-based Web consulting company recently raised the question: Are users of other Web browsers smarter than the people who use Microsoft’s Internet Explorer?

AptiQuant gave more than 100,000 participants an IQ test, while monitoring which browser they used to take the test. The result? Internet Explorer users scored lower than average, while Chrome, Firefox and Safari users were slightly above average.

And users of the more obscure Camino and Opera browsers, as well as those using Explorer with Chrome Frame (a plug-in designed to let users view emerging HTML5 content), had what AptiQuaint called “exceptionally higher” IQ levels.

Those numbers, it should be noted, probably aren’t very scientific. The field of test-takers was self-selecting — people who chose, on their own, to take an IQ test instead of a scientifically selected study group. They found the test through Web searches or ads the company placed online.

The report suggests that people using Explorer, the built-in, default browser for Windows-based computers, may be more resistant to change. A similar study in 2006 showed users on the then-current IE browser scored above average.

Internet Explorer is the world’s most popular browser, with about a 43% share, according to StatCounter. Firefox has just under 30%, and Google’s Chrome has 19%, according to a report from May.

Users of Internet Explorer 6, released in 2001, scored the lowest on the tests, at just over 80. Users of Opera, the Norway-based browser, scored the highest at well over 120. (What AptiQuant called its complete results included a bar graph showing the scores, but didn’t appear to have text giving the exact numbers.)

IQ scores have a “population mean” of 100.

If this all smacks of a little good, old-fashioned Microsoft hate, the language the company uses in its report doesn’t do much to downplay that.

“It is common knowledge that Internet Explorer Versions 6.0 to 8.0 are highly incompatible with modern web standards. In order to make websites work properly on these browsers, web developers have to spend a lot of unnecessary effort …,” said the report from AptiQuant, which offers online tools for employers to measure employee, and potential employee, aptitude.

“Now that we have a statistical pattern on the continuous usage of incompatible browsers, better steps can be taken to eradicate this nuisance.”

Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall Wedding Details

Although she counts Princess Anne as her mother, Zara Phillips and her fiance Mike Tindall are famously as far from the royal mindset as they come.

As Zara’s future mother-in-law Linda Tindall told the Daily Mail, “Many-a-time Mike has said if she worked at Tesco [supermarket] at the checkout it would not matter, it’s about her and the sort of person she is.”

But while Phillips has been accepted into the Tindall clan with ease, acclimating Tindall to his new royal relatives has been harder.

The Telegraph reports that Princess Anne suggested he have corrective surgery on his nose, which is slightly misshapen from repeated sports injuries. “She’s a bit worried about how the wedding photos might turn out,” the Telegraph revealed.

She needn’t worry too much, as the photos will most likely not be seen by the general public: as previously noted, Buckingham Palace thwarted Phillips’ plans to sell wedding day photos to tabloid magazine Hello! for over $800,000.

Instead, Phillips and Tindall’s wedding this Saturday will be private, more of “a family thing” than a royal event. Owing to Zara’s non-royal status (while her mother has a royal title, she and her brother Peter do not), the wedding is beng independently funded, with even the royal reception venue, Holyroodhouse in Scotland, being paid for out of pocket by Zara’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Tindall’s guests will include many fellow rugby players, while Phillips has invited members of her equestrian community. “She regards herself as a sportswoman not as a royal. She would even dispute the fact it’s a royal wedding,” said Joe Little, editor of Majesty magazine.

Added royal historian Hugo Vickers, “I wouldn’t say he is marrying into the royal family, rather she is marrying out of the royal family.”

There is one indisputably royal element of the wedding: Friday night’s pre-party on the famous Royal Yacht Britannia. Once described by Queen Elizabeth II as “the one place I can truly relax,” the Royal Yacht Britannia is 83rd in a line of royal yachts and has seen Winston Churchill, Mahatma Ghandi, Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan and Nelson Mandela (to name a few) come aboard its decks, writes the Telegraph.

More importantly, the Telegraph noted, four royal couples have bunked in the yacht’s honeymoon suite after their weddings…and all have been doomed to failure: Princess Margaret and the Earl of Snowdon sailed in 1960, Zara’s mum Princess Anne and father Captain Mark Phillips shared the room in 1973, Charles and Diana honeymooned in 1981, and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson used the boat for their honeymoon in 1986.

Looks like Zara and Mike’s reported lack of honeymoon might actually be a blessing in disguise. Phillips and Tindall will forgo a honeymoon as the groom returns to rugby training camp on Sunday night, writes the Telegraph.

Apple Now Has More Cash Than US Government

Maybe the cash-strapped US government should start selling iPads.

According to the latest statement from the U.S. Treasury, the government had an operating cash balance Wednesday of $73.8 billion. That’s still a lot of money, but it’s less than what Steve Jobs has lying around.

Tech juggernaut Apple had a whopping $76.2 billion in cash and marketable securities at the end of June, according to its last earnings report. Unlike the U.S. government, which is scrambling to avoid defaulting on its debt, Apple takes in more money than it spends.

This symbolic feat — the world’s most highly valued tech company surpassing the fiscal strength of the world’s most powerful nation — is just the latest pinnacle for Apple, which has been on an unprecedented roll.

Its Macs, iPhones and iPads remain hot sellers, its stock has surged past $400 a share and Apple just became the world’s largest smartphone vendor by volume.

There’s been a lot of speculation about what Apple might buy with its piles of cash — Facebook and Sony being two of the more high-profile examples — but the company doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to make a move.

“We don’t let the cash burn a hole in the pocket or make stupid acquisitions,” CEO Jobs said last fall. “We’d like to continue to keep our powder dry because we think there are one or more strategic opportunities in the future.”

Offering Uncle Sam a short-term loan is probably not one of them.

How to Buy a Wedding Dress

Might you have to think about buying a wedding dress when your wedding ceremony is months away, might you can find a good one in a short time with panic, but we suggest you to go eat some lunch, discuss it with family or friends and then come back to make your purchase. Once you put money down on a special order, the dress is yours, so don’t rush your decision and then be regretful.

Most manufacturers will allow you to lengthen a train, shorten a train, take off some beads, or add beads. If there is something you would love to add/change to your dress just ask the salesperson.

You have decided on your perfect wedding dress and now it is time to order it. Make sure you write down the style number, color, and size and copy it, this way you have proof of what was supposed to be ordered.

In the next couple of days after you place your order and get an estimated delivery date. This way you can be sure they ordered it. These are estimated dates not actual dates. No one can give you an actual date. This is the real world and things do happen.

Sometimes when a dress came and unpacked, we will find dirt or stains in the dress. We notify the manufacturer immediately and they provide us with a new dress at no extra charge. If your dress came in from the manufacturer stained or dirty you should have no problem requesting a new one. If, in fact, the manufacturer never ordered you a new dress and are trying to pass the floor sample on to you, you have every right to demand your money back or if it would satisfy you, to have the dress cleaned at their expense. Always make sure you do it as soon as you can when your special order dress comes in, including your bridesmaid dresses as well. If you go in immediately then you can still get the manufacturer to replace the dress if anything is wrong. Usually most manufacturers give the shop one to two weeks to notify them if something is wrong. After the certain time frame there is nothing you can do to request a new dress if something is wrong.

Royal Wedding: Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall

When Zara Phillips, Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter, marries Mike Tindall in Edinburgh on Saturday, the ceremony will be—by royal standards—a modest affair.

The queen will be sitting at the front, and there will be plenty of royals elsewhere in the church. One of the happy pair at the altar will have royal blood in her veins; the other comes from middle-class stock. Wedding guests will gather afterward at a nearby royal palace, and there’ll be police marksmen in place to cover the event.

But that’s where the similarities to this year’s big royal wedding end. Forget the media hoo-ha that surrounded the nuptials of William and Kate. When the queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips marries her longstanding boyfriend, Mike Tindall, in Edinburgh on Saturday, the occasion will be as private and low-key as any part-royal couple can reasonably expect.

There’ll be no gaping worldwide television audience of billions, no foreign dignitaries invited for reasons of protocol, no swooning crowds outside. Instead, there’ll be just 300 friends and family at the 17th Canongate Kirk in the ancient center of Edinburgh, the queen’s usual place of worship when she’s in the city.

Her fiancé is a 32-year-old star player on England’s Rugby World Cup team who has broken his nose eight times on the rugby pitch and is nicknamed Fridge for his bulk. His father is a former bank official now employed as a finance officer in a prison. His mother is a social worker.

Sure, the couple hasn’t forsworn all the advantages that go with royalty. The pre-wedding party for 150 guests was held on the royal yacht Britannia, decommissioned in 1997 and now a tourist attraction moored in Leith, the port of Edinburgh. The reception will be held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the queen’s official residence in Scotland.

If their backgrounds are very different, the pair are united by sport. Together for eight years, they met for the first time in a bar in Sydney, Australia, during the 2003 Rugby World Cup tournament. There’ll be no honeymoon after the wedding because Tindall is training for the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, and Phillips will be competing in the Gatcombe Park international horse trials next month.

Large Crowd Expected at Lady Gaga’s Hollywood Concert

A day after an out-of-control crowd clashed with police outside a film premiere, security is being beefed up ahead of a Lady Gaga concert in Hollywood Thursday night.

Fire Battalion Chief Michel Bowman says he’s doubling the number of fire inspectors at Thursday evening’s event to monitor the size of the crowd.

He said 2,000 fans have been permitted to attend a taping of the concert behind the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” studio. The show is doubling its security staff and paying for the extra fire personnel.

A film premiere and block party attracted hundreds of electronic music fans to the same area Wednesday, resulting in an unruly crowd that clashed with police in riot gear.

Police Cmdr. Andy Smith says there will be extra officers to prevent a repeat of Wednesday’s disturbance.

Wedding Gown Fashion Today

More and more women are buying a wedding dress online today because of the wide variety and selection of unique. Informal wedding dresses, designer wedding dresses and even discount wedding dresses can all be found online thanks to modern technology. Most brides to be can purchase extravagant looking, custom made gowns for a fraction of the cost they would find them in a department store. Online shopping for wedding dresses has another benefit– convenience. With so many things to plan for a wedding (location, cake, reception, flowers, invitations, rehearsal dinner etc.etc) most women appreciate having a handy resource for buying their wedding dress. Most women also find a wider selection of sizes and custom features available when they shop online vs. when they shop in a traditional store.

Trends have changed when it comes to modern wedding attire. No longer do all brides seek out a traditional white gown for their special occasion. In fact, there is a huge selection of vintage and informal wedding dresses available, many of which don’t even look like official wedding gowns.

Most dresses today focus on the unique personality of the bride rather than socially accepted “norms” when it comes to buying a wedding dress. In general many brides are looking for wedding gowns that are narrower than they have been in times of old, and those that offer clean silhouettes. These types of dresses usually lengthen the body and provide a slimming effect. Some more popular trends include the following:

A line wedding dresses that are long and slimming

Sheaths with trains built into the silhouette, so that it trails behind the bride

Bias-cut wedding gowns that follow the natural curves of the body, ending in a small flare at the bottom

Raised waistline ball-gown styles

Square necklines that provide a fresh open look

Off the shoulder wedding dresses providing a full neckline

Sleeveless or cap sleeve gowns which are especially popular for summer brides

Empire waists which elongate the figure and shift the focus upward

Trends are also apparent with regard to fabrics. Satin and silk gowns have long been popular, though sheer fabrics are also becoming more trendy, including chiffon and organzas. Embroidery is also replacing lace for many modern gowns, and some brides are opting to accent their dresses with pearls and other quality beads.

No matter what style wedding gowns you choose, the most important thing is that you select one that makes you look good, feel good and happy on the most important day of your life. You’re sure to find a superb selection.

Wedding Dress Revealed

Wedding dresses have changed with time much as everything in the world has. In times of old most women selected a gown based on her financial status. Women who were at an economic disadvantage usually did not have the luxury of selecting an extraordinary gown that would be worn only once. Rather, most selected something more “plain” that could be worn for church services and other occasions after their blessed day.

As we all know white is usually accepted as the traditional color of gowns, and many designer wedding dresses are still fashioned in this color, representing the “purity” and “innocence” of the bride to be. However there are still many women opt for other colors, including blue, pink, cream, yellow and more.

Wedding gowns of varying styles and colors were popular among the elite, and by and large represented the unique style and personality of the bride to be, as well as modern trends at the time.

An old poem states about the color of a wedding dress that “Married in white, you will have chosen all right.” This is not to say that all brides historically have chosen white for their wedding gown. In fact, many brides chose colors including blue, pearl and even black. Many brides believed that if they wore blue their husbands would remain true to them (also a famous line in the wedding poem). Pink was even a popular wedding gown color for a time, though its darker variant, red was often considered taboo because it was associated with “scarlet women”.

Many women who did not have a large budget to spend on a wedding dress in times of old opted for fashions that could be worn any day, rather than solely on their wedding day. For their wedding day, they would dress up their gown with accessories and flowers, even bows that could be removed after the festivities.

Jessica Simpson: No Wedding Dress Yet!

Jessica Simpson has not chosen a wedding gown for her upcoming wedding though she said month ago she was on the hunt for the perfect, low cut wedding dress.

The 31-year-old bride-to-be opened up to Extra TV, saying she is more focused currently on her new reality show Fashion Star, but insists the wedding dress will be “amazing”.

She became engaged to American footballer Eric Johnson last year after six months of dating.

Jessica is looking forward to her big day and wants it to be a fun time.

“I don’t have a dress yet,” Jessica said. “The dress is going to be amazing. With a wedding, it should be a celebration like we should all be having fun, every single person there.”

But the singer-turned-fashion-designer was coy about the actual wedding date and did not give any indication how soon she will be taking her second trip down the aisle.

“I’ve heard people throw around dates and not one of them has nailed it. Not even close,” she laughed.

Jessica is set to star as a mentor on the new fashion based show that puts aspiring designers through their paces in a bid to win a multi-million dollar contract to launch their own fashion label.

Her ex-husband Nick Lachey married his new wife Vanessa Minnillo on Necker Island earlier this month.
