Mariah Carey Returns

Mariah Carey hasn’t been seen much since she had twins. The sexy entertainer has been focused on motherhood and all the glory that comes with having new kids in the house. While she has been enjoying life, her fans have been wondering. Wonder no more as Mariah Carey took two hours out of her mom schedule to promote her jewelry on HSN on Sunday. This was the first time she has been seen in public for an extended period of time since the birth of her kids.

The good folks over at Gawker have been kind enough to gather up a few of the singer’s most awesome moments, which included several references to birthing twins (“Literally I was like 47 weeks pregnant”) as well as her directing the camera people to stop shooting her (“Take the camera off me please, I know you guys hear me.”)

Our personal favorites? Carey’s faux-British accent, which is very reminiscent of the Countess LuAnn de Lesseps from the “Real Housewives of New York” (“Hello dahhling”), and her invention of a new word based on camouflage. (Carey explained that while pregnant she “needed a camouflagian moment.”)

The Diva is back!

Winehouse Post-mortem Takes Place

A post-mortem examination into the death of Amy Winehouse has taken place after her body was found on Saturday at her home in Camden, north London.

“Amy was about one thing and that was love. Her whole life was devoted to her family and her friends and to you guys as well,” said her father Mitch Winehouse.

The singer’s mother and brother also visited the site to see the flowers, cards and photos fans laid in tribute.

A representative for Winehouse said the funeral would not take place on Monday.

A family spokesman said earlier the funeral would be held as soon as possible, with coroners issuing interim death certificates allowing arrangements to be made.

Traditionally, Jewish funerals take place as quickly as possible following a death.

This Brit and Grammy award-winner had struggled with drink and drug addiction for many years and had recently spent time in rehab.

But police have declined to say whether her death was drug-related.

Police spokesman Supt Raj Kohli said: “It would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause of death.”

He added: “My sympathy extends not just to her immediate family but clearly to the thousands and millions of fans across the world.”

The singer, who topped the charts with her album Back To Black, was found dead by a member of her security team. The album re-entered the charts on Sunday almost five years after it was released.

Last month, Winehouse pulled out of a comeback tour after she was jeered during her first gig in Serbia, when she appeared to be too drunk to perform. But she had recently finished a course of alcohol rehabilitation in London and was under strict instructions not to drink.

Former head of Island Records, Mark Marot, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that the singer’s record company had behaved responsibly.

Alan McGee, the man behind Creation Records, which launched bands like Oasis, Primal Scream and Super Furry Animals, said: “If someone takes too many drugs, it’s their problem.”

McGee, who had a well-documented drug problem himself in the 1990s, added: “Only you can get yourself clean, it’s all immaterial unless you get clean.”

The cost of weddings spirals in China

Every year in China more than ten million couples tie the knot. Weddings are a multi-billion-dollar business and expenses for the big day can quickly spiral out of control.

Cecilia and Ye Min will get married in a church because Cecilia is a Christian. They were shocked when they did their sums and realised their wedding expenses would come to around $30,000 (£18,000).

How could a simple wedding cost so much?

Ten or 15 years ago, if you asked people what diamonds were for they would tell you they were used in power tools, but now diamonds have a inevitable connection with wedding and marriage. The engagement ring is just the beginning of the expenses. Photos, gowns and decorations all have to be budgeted for and it is the groom’s parents who usually pick up the largest part of the bill.

The wedding banquet is the biggest expense; Cecilia and Ye Min are inviting 200 guests who will sit at 20 tables and they have a budget of $12,000 (£7,400).

“It’s very hard to find the right restaurant. We both want the food to be really good, and for it to look fabulous. But it has to fit our budget,” Cecilia says.

Beyond the engagement ring a highlight for Cecilia and Ye Min will be their honeymoon in Mauritius. Ye Min is relieved the financial responsibility for the trip will not just be down to him. “Our honeymoon trip will cost about $5,000 (£3,000). But I won’t pay for all of it. Cecilia and I will share the expenses because we will be married by then!”

So is cash lavished on weddings money well spent?

Dr Feng Lui, the Chairman of the Financial Planning Standards Board of China, isn’t sure.

“‘Face’ has too much importance in China. Financially it’s stupid to spend all that money on one moment … you could put it towards buying a house, your retirement, even buying insurance,” he says.

Some young couples spend their entire annual salary on the day, but travelling abroad or simply showing some creativity can effectively keep costs down.

The wedding industry in China is worth over $80bn (£49bn) and with a growing middle class, this shows no sign of decreasing.

150 Human Animal Hybrids Grown in UK Labs

Scientists have created more than 150 human-animal hybrid embryos in British laboratories. The hybrids have been produced secretively over the past three years by researchers looking into possible cures for a wide range of diseases.

The revelation comes just a day after a committee of scientists warned of a nightmare “Planet of the Apes” scenario in which work on human-animal creations goes too far.

Last night a campaigner against the excesses of medical research said he was disgusted that scientists were “dabbling in the grotesque”.

Figures seen by the Daily Mail show that 155 “admixed”embryos, containing both human and animal genetic material, have been created since the introduction of the 2008 Human Fertilisation Embryology Act.

This legalised the creation of a variety of hybrids, including an animal egg fertilised by a human sperm; “cybrids”, in which a human nucleus is implanted into an animal cell; and ‘chimeras’, in which human cells are mixed with animal embryos.

Scientists say the techniques can be used to develop embryonic stem cells which can be used to treat a range of incurable illnesses.

Three labs in the UK – at King’s College London, Newcastle University and Warwick University – were granted licences to carry out the research after the Act came into force.

All have now stopped creating hybrid embryos due to a lack of funding, but scientists believe that there will be more such work in the future.

The figure was revealed to crossbench peer Lord Alton following a Parliamentary question.

At every stage the justification from scientists has been: if only you allow us to do this, we will find cures for every illness known to mankind. This is emotional blackmail.

Josephine Quintavalle, of pro-life group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, said: “I am aghast that this is going on and we didn’t know anything about it.”

Test centre: Newcastle University was another site where human animal hybrid testing was being undertaken.

Earlier this week, a group of leading scientists warned about “Planet of the Apes” experiments. They called for new rules to prevent lab animals being given human attributes, for example by injecting human stem cells into the brains of primates.

But the lead author of their report,  Professor Robin Lovell-Badge, from the Medical Research Council’ s National Institute for Medical Research, said the scientists were not concerned about human-animal hybrid embryos because by law these have to be destroyed within 14 days.

He said: “The reason for doing these experiments is to understand more about early human development and come up with ways of curing serious diseases, and as a scientist I feel there is a moral imperative to pursue this research. As long as we have sufficient controls – as we do in this country – we should be proud of the research.”

However, he called for stricter controls on another type of embryo research, in which animal embryos are implanted with a small amount of human genetic material.

Human-animal hybrids are also created in other countries, many of which have little or no regulation.

Wedding Jokes

❤ A little girl at a wedding asked, “Mommy, why do brides always wear white?” The mom replied, “Because they’re happy, dear.”

Halfway through the wedding the girl whispered, “Mommy, if brides wear white because they’re happy, then why do men wear black?”

❤ A young couple were married and then embarked on their honeymoon. When they returned, the bride ran to the phone and called her mother, who asked, “How was your honeymoon, dear?” “Oh, mama!” she replied, “The honeymoon was so wonderful and romantic…” But then, suddenly she burst out crying and said “but, mama, as soon as we returned home, he started using the most horrible language… things I’d never heard before! I mean, all these awful 4-letter words! You’ve got to come get me and take me home. Please mama!”

“Darling, darling,” her mother said, “calm down and tell me, what words could be so awful?” And, the daughter cried “please don’t make me tell you, mama! I’m so embarrassed – they’re just too awful! Just come and get me, please!”

“Oh, darling, you must tell me what has you so upset… tell me these horrible 4-letter words!” Still sobbing, the bride said, “Oh, mama… words like DUST, WASH, IRON, COOK…!”

❤ Three men were at a bar. Two of the men were discussing the control they had over their wives, while the third remained uninterested.

After a short while, the two men turned to the third and asked, “What about you? What kind of control do you have over your wife?” The third man turned to the first two and said, “Well, just the other day I had her on her knees!”

The two men were dumbfounded. “Wow that’s incredible! What happened next?” they asked. The third man took a healthy swig of his beer, sighed and grumbled, “Then she started screaming at me to get out from under the bed and fight like a man!”

Care for Leather Handbags

In such a modern time most people may wonder what to do when a leather bag gets soiled. Dust, grime and body oils will cause havoc on leather handbags in time. With proper care, it’s conceivable to enjoy designer handbags nearly continually.

Pay particular attention to the areas of the leather bag, such as the handle and clasp. These sections tend to be the most likely to be the first to show signs of grime on leather as it is handled the most.

Never spray any commercial cleaning product, alcohol or turpentine based item onto a leather handbag. Revitalize it up instead with the alternative of using baby wash, and Microfiber towels.

Dilute a drop or two of the formulated baby wash to 10-12 ounces of water. Pour this combination into a spray dispenser.

Spray directly onto the Microfiber towel rather than on the bag.

Take the damp towel and gently wipe the bag against the grain of the leather, by using smooth and even strokes.

Scratched bags are another familiar issue.

Applying matching shoe polish is tolerable for minor touch-ups on leather handbags .

This is only a temporary fix for leather bags and will wear off in a short period.

Go easy on the amount of polish used. Excessive use on handbags will cause the leather to harden.

Head to a professional.

Accept the fact that certain stains on leather handbags cannot be accomplished with an at home cleaning methods. Stains such as oil, ink, wax or lipstick will require its riddance through the services a dry cleaning professional that specializes in leather.

Rail Ministry Struggles to Clear Doubts after the Crash

The nation’s railway ministry and high-speed rail system have both come under fierce criticism after a fatal collision between two bullet trains Saturday night in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province.

The accident killed at least 35,  and was due to an equipment failure caused by a lightning strike.

A total of 192 people were injured, ministry spokesman Wang Yongping said at a press conference on Sunday, adding that 132 injured were being treated at 11 hospitals in the city.

The wreckage of the two trains was removed from the tracks and rail operations had reopened by 7 pm on Sunday.

“China has advanced high-speed railway technology. We are still confident about that,” Wang said.

The bullet trains travel at an average speed of 200 kilometers per hour (kph), while high -speed ones run at between 250 and 300 kph.

Train D301, carrying 558 passengers from Beijing to Fuzhou, rear-ended train D3115, also heading to Fuzhou from Hangzhou with 1,072 people on board, at 8:50 pm Saturday on a bridge close to Wenzhou South Station.

D3115 was forced to halt on the 15-meter-high bridge due to lightning, the ministry said.

It was unknown how long the D3115 had been stopped before the collision. The train had been scheduled to stop at Wenzhou South Station at 7:57 pm.

Four of the D301’s carriages fell off the bridge, while two of the D3115’s carriages were derailed but did not fall off.

Hundreds of Wenzhou residents flooded to the city’s blood bank on Sunday night to donate their blood in hope of helping the victims.

A local resident, surnamed Zhao, who was among the first to join the rescue efforts, told the Global Times that he saw the train stopped on the track as storms thundered overheard.

“When we heard a very loud crash, I asked my neighbors to come with me to help,” Zhao said, who helped six passengers out of their carriage although only one of these survived.

“It was a total disaster, and the situation worsened when the ambulance arrived only 20 minutes after we called for help due to heavy rain and congested traffic,” Zhao added.

Three officials with the Shanghai Railway Bureau were sacked on Sunday as the investigation got underway.

Long Jing, head of the Shanghai Railway Bureau, Li Jia, head of the bureau’s Communist Party of China, and deputy bureau chief, He Shengli, were removed from their positions, the Ministry of Railways said on Sunday.

The ministry spokesman Wang offered his condolences to the victims.

When asked about the compensation plans, Wang said unified standards will be applied for both Chinese and foreign passengers.

A Russian and a US passenger were among the injured.

This collision is the latest and most serious accident to put China’s high-speed railway system in doubt.

A high-speed train heading for Shanghai halted for over two hours in Jinan, Shandong Province on July 10, only ten days after the line’s debut.

Another five malfunctions happened in the next four days along the Beijing-Shanghai line, raising doubts about the safety of the trains, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Wang Mengshu, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, said that a false operation by the engineers might have caused the collision.

“Bullet trains are equipped with automatic warning systems that alert the engineer to decelerate when another train is spotted 4 kilometers ahead. When it is 2 kilometers away, the engineer would be warned to brake,” Wang said.

However, the brake must be manually operated as there is no automatic braking system and therefore the judgment of the engineers must be relied upon, Wang said.

“The accident reflected the technological and managerial flaws of bullet trains. Nevertheless, public confidence over bullet and high-speed trains should not be daunted by one accident,” Wang said.

IMF urges China to Strengthen Yuan

China faces risks from inflation and a possible boom and bust in real estate prices and should allow its tightly controlled currency to rise to promote economic stability, said the International Monetary Fund.

“A stronger renminbi would increase household income, boost consumption, make China’s manufacturing products more affordable for the Chinese people, and help build a stronger service economy,” economist Nigel Chalk, the IMF’s mission chief for China, said in a statement.

That statement comes as United States officials have long urged China to allow its currency the renminbi — or yuan — to appreciate more rapidly. Between 2008 and 2010, China had pegged the yuan to the dollar, keeping its value artificially low.

U.S. officials claim that China continues to manipulate the yuan, giving Chinese exporters an unfair advantage that has created global trade imbalances.

Over the past year, the currency has appreciated 5.5% against the weakening U.S. dollar. Once economists take China’s rapid inflation into account though, the yuan has actually depreciated, the IMF said.

A stronger yuan that floats more freely against international currencies could help China lessen imbalances in its economy, including high inflation, the report said.

Rapidly rising food prices, a possible real estate bubble and a decline in credit quality are all potential risks that could impede China’s rapid growth, it said.

Nevertheless, the IMF expects China’s gross domestic product to grow 9.6% this year and 9.5% in 2012.

In contrast, growth in the U.S. is forecast to pick up only 2.5% in 2011 and 2.8% in 2012.

Chinese authorities disagreed with the IMF’s currency recommendations, the report said.
